Scalp Facial || What The Hype Is All About

Your scalp is part of your body which means it can hold tension. This explains why a simple and light massage on that area can trigger a reaction in which endorphins get released and our bodies instantly feel good. Additionally, our heads go through a lot during the day from sweating to covering with hats (or hijabs) and using a lot of heavy products like dry shampoos, gels, and styling creams which creates a lot of buildups. This can irritate the skin of your scalp leading to hair shedding, thinning, and a problematic scalp. Luckily, the beauty industry is paying extra attention to scalp care products in the last few years. And one of the latest trends that is going viral in the scalp business recently is “scalp facial”. So What is it? And how can you immediately add this new “head spa” treatment to your usual at-home haircare routine?

What Is “Scalp Facial”?

Similar to a regular facial, this treatment includes a few steps like exfoliating, massaging, and moisturizing the skin of the scalp for a fuller, healthier, and shinier than ever hair.

How Can It Help Your Scalp?

This multi-step facial helps to deeply cleanse your scalp removing all impurities, excess oil, and product build-up from the scalp. It also helps unclog hair follicles for healthier hair growth. If you have dandruff, scalp facial can hydrate your scalp, remove flakes, and eliminate itchiness.

How To Do It At Home?

Step #1: What Does Your Scalp Needs?

Before you do anything you have to think of your scalp like your skin. Get to know what exactly does it need and treat it accordingly. Your scalp will tell you its needs in the form of dandruff, oily scalp, hair loss, or breakage. Once you get an idea of the state of your scalp health you’ll be choosing the products more mindfully. For example, if your scalp is itchy all the time, you might be dealing with dandruff or congestion and you should find a pre-treatment scrub with either peppermint, tea tree, or citrus-based oils. If your scalp is very oily, look instead for a product that can help reduce oiliness.

Step #2: Time For A Scalp Massage

After you applied your targeted pre-treatment product, it’s time to massage it in. Take three to five minutes of your time to gently massage your scalp starting from the nape of your neck all the way to the head and up to the crown. Massage helps relax the scalp, boosts circulation, and improves hair growth.

Step #3: Cleanse The Scalp

After you left the pre-treatment on for at least 15 minutes, it is time to rinse it off. With a hydrating or detoxifying shampoo wash your hair thoroughly. Two to three times per week should be enough.

Step #4: Lock In Moisture

To restore the moisture that may have been lost from the shampoo and the pre-treatment product you need to apply conditioner not only to the ends of your hair but to your scalp too. Leave it on for two to three minutes before washing it off.

Step #5: Apply Serum

Finally, apply serum or lotion that targets any scalp concerns you have, be it dandruff, irritated scalp, or oily scalp. This should leave your hair healthier, shinier, and stronger.
