5 Hyaluronic Acid Myths Debunked

Whether we like it or not, a huge part of the skincare industry is a big fat lie… All the miraculous claims you see on the labels and social media of top products are nothing but a marketing plan to get you sold. And you are not to blame, the buzz about certain ingredients or products makes you think that you have finally figured out the fountain of youth. While in actual fact, you haven’t.

Today we are going to dig deep into one of the most trending skincare ingredients for the past decade and it is hyaluronic acid. Sounds too familiar, right? I am sure you have used it before either on it is own or in one of your skincare products that claim heavenly youthful and plumpy skin.

Hyaluronic acid got too popular lately that we couldn’t skip or ignore. It is everywhere, literally… But you know what, that popularity does not make it necessarily good for you. That said, it is so important to question any buzz product or ingredient you come across before you try, and to simply ditch it if you tried it and found out that it doesn’t work for you. Here are some myths debunked about our one and only “Hyaluronic Acid”.

Myth #1: Hyaluronic Acid Products Penetrate To Your Dermis

Your skin simply consists of two layers epidermis (the top layer) and dermis (the deep layer) where natural hyaluronic acid lies giving your skin the bouncy and plumpy effect. Skincare brands will claim that their products will go super deep into your skin plumping it up like a cushion… that’s not true. The truth is, it literally does not pass your epidermis. It stays within your epidermis, it actually doesn’t even go close to your dermis where the natural HA is.

Myth #2: HA Is Super Hydrating

The natural HA which holds up to 1000 times its weight in water and it draws the water from your diet giving you a baby-like skin. BUT that doesn’t apply to any synthesis HA even if the brand claims so. So if the natural HA gets the water from your diet and body, the synthesis HA gets the water from… Hmmm, your skin… Which means it slowly emptying your cells of all the water content in order to puff your surface and decrease the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This explains why it can make your skin more cracked or even dehydrated overtime.

Myth #3: Sodium Hyaluronate Penetrates The Skin Better Than Hyaluronic Acid Because It’s A Smaller Size

That’s not true. As Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, and it comes in all sizes. So the fact that it is on the label doesn’t mean that it will penetrate better into your skin. And skin care brands use sodium hyaluronate not because it is better for your skin, but mainly because it is the cheaper version of hyaluronic so they can make more money out of your skincare routine.

Myth #4: Hyaluronic Acid Is So Soothing

Sorry to tell you that, but that’s not true… Although, high molecular weight HA has been proven to help with wound healing, low molecular weight is actually inflammatory and it increases redness, dryness and irritation.

Myth #5: Hyaluronic Acid Is Anti-Aging

Yes, natural Hyaluronic Acid help lubricate and cushion your skin making it look young and plump. But the production of Hyaluronic Acid decreases as you age. That’s why we tend to add it to our skincare products. However, the fact that Hyaluronic Acid molecular weight is about 3,000nm makes it so hard to penetrate your skin.

True, you might see some effects once you apply it, but it is only temporary. The only way to get long-term effects is through Hyaluronic Acid injections which can plump your skin for 6 months.

Bottom Line

HA is not that bad, just make sure to use it right. Try to limit your use only before big events to plump your face temporarily without damaging your skin over time. But if you just can’t imagine your life without it limit your HA use to one product only and don’t over use it.
