Her unique approach integrates the calming melodies of the handpan with the expressive power of art, creating a transformative experience for those seeking healing and self-discovery. In Our conversation with Samah, she shares her journey, insights, and the profound impact of her work on the lives of her participants.
Could you walk us through your journey into music and art, and how you decided to integrate these with holistic health practices?
My journey into music and art began with a deep love for the handpan during a trip to Africa, an instrument whose soothing tones resonated with my soul. As I explored its healing potential, I realized how powerful sound can be in promoting well-being. This led me to sound healing, where I combined the handpan’s calming vibrations with art therapy, creating a holistic approach that nurtures both the mind and body. This integration allows me to offer a unique and transformative experience that blends music, creativity, and healing.
How do you design your events and workshops to cater to the diverse needs of your participants, particularly when combining elements like music and art therapy?
When designing my sound healing and art therapy sessions, I focus on creating a flexible and inclusive environment. I tailor each event to meet the unique needs of participants, blending the calming sounds of the handpan with creative art activities. This combination allows everyone to engage at their own pace, whether they seek relaxation, self-expression, or deeper healing. By listening to participants and adapting the flow of the session, I ensure that everyone feels supported and empowered throughout the experience.
Can you share a particularly memorable experience from one of your retreats or workshops where you felt your work profoundly impacted a participant or a group?
One memorable moment was at Al Hussain Cancer Center, where I played handpan music for the children. They were thrilled, dancing, clapping, and trying out the instrument. I especially remember one little girl who, when it was time for a food break, told me she didn’t want to stop and wanted to keep enjoying the music. It was wonderful to see how much joy the music brought them.
As a certified art therapist and family counselor, what challenges do you often face in your practice, and how do you overcome them?
As an art therapist and family counselor, one of the challenges I often face is helping clients, particularly children, express emotions they find difficult to put into words. To overcome this, I use art as a non-verbal way for them to communicate their feelings. By creating a safe and supportive environment, I encourage them to explore and express themselves freely, which often leads to breakthroughs in their healing process.
In your opinion, what is the most significant benefit that art therapy offers, especially in today’s fast-paced world?
In today’s fast-paced world, the most significant benefit of art therapy is its ability to provide a space for reflection and emotional expression. It helps individuals slow down, process their feelings, and find inner peace, offering a much-needed balance and relief from the stresses of daily life.
Music can be a powerful tool for healing and expression. Could you describe how you incorporate music into your therapeutic practices and the outcomes you aim for?
I incorporate music, especially the handpan, into my therapeutic practices to create a calming and soothing atmosphere. The gentle tones help participants relax, open emotionally, and connect more deeply with their inner selves. The outcomes I aim for include reduced stress, emotional release, and a sense of peace and well-being. I recall one client in a group art therapy session who, despite her initial fear of painting, felt a release of all her thoughts through the handpan’s music and was incredibly proud of herself by the end.
You emphasize the importance of creating a supportive community through your events. How do you ensure that each participant feels included and valued?
In my handpan community in Dubai, I ensure everyone feels included and valued by gathering weekly or monthly to play together on the beach or in the desert. I regularly teach handpan lessons so that everyone can learn and play the same rhythms. This way, each participant contributes to the group, and we create a supportive and connected atmosphere. Here in Jordan, I’ve started to build a small group of talented women who love the handpan and are trying to keep up with me. I include some of them in my events, fostering a sense of community and shared growth.
Are there new areas within art and holistic health that you are interested in exploring through your work?
Yes, I’m excited to explore how sound healing music can be integrated into holistic health practices within our group of psychiatrists. We aim to use this approach to support patients with depression, cancer, ADHD, and the elderly, providing them with a non-traditional way to heal and enhance their well-being in hospitals.
With such a strong emphasis on holistic practices, how do you stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in your field?
I stay updated on art therapy and sound healing by following recent research, reading relevant articles, attending workshops, and joining professional groups. Currently, I am studying for a new diploma in art therapy at Amman University. This helps me learn new techniques and trends to enhance my practice.
For someone interested in exploring art therapy or attending one of your workshops, what advice would you give them to make the most out of the experience?
To make the most out of an art therapy workshop, stay open-minded and curious. Express your feelings through art, even if you have no previous knowledge. Always ask questions and seek guidance. Build connections with others, and attend more workshops to discover your passion and explore what resonates with you
