A Year of Impact || Reflecting on the Journey of Pop-up for Gaza
Reflecting on this past year, the Pop-up for Gaza initiative has significantly transformed. What began as a one-time fundraising effort has now become a key source of support for students from Gaza who have been displaced. This initiative has not only provided financial aid but has also symbolized the resilience and generosity of the community.
Dawn Bississo, Pop-up for Gaza’s founder, shared her thoughts: “This year has been remarkable in terms of growth and learning. Initially, our plan was for just one event, but the community’s enthusiasm and dedication inspired us to expand our efforts. Throughout the year, we’ve hosted several events, raising funds that have directly benefited the students, ensuring they can continue their studies without financial burdens.”
The overwhelming support from the community has been a major factor in the initiative’s success. “The level of generosity within our community has been amazing,” Bississo noted. “People have not only contributed financially but have also volunteered their time and offered spaces for events at no cost. Our efforts are not solely about fundraising; they are about empowering our community to make a tangible difference.”
An important achievement has been the partnership with Tadamon, a technology-driven NGO that ensures transparency in how donations are utilized. “Transparency is essential for us and our supporters,” explained Bississo. “Collaborating with Tadamon has allowed us to guarantee that every contribution is fully utilized for maximum impact, with no deductions for organizational costs. This approach has resonated well with our community and has been crucial in building the trust necessary for our growth.”
The journey has been challenging at times. “There have been moments of overwhelming pressure,” Bississo admitted. “Witnessing the ongoing hardships in Gaza while trying to provide some relief has been tough for everyone involved. However, the resilience shown by the students we support has continually inspired us and given us the strength to persevere.”
The team has embraced innovation to overcome challenges, such as donor fatigue, by introducing smaller, more engaging donation options. “Creativity has been key,” Bississo stated. “We’ve implemented various small-scale fundraising methods like raffles and consistent smaller donations, emphasizing that every contribution counts.”
As they prepare for their upcoming event on October 5th, there is a strong determination to make an even greater impact. “This upcoming pop-up is crucial. The needs are greater than ever due to the continuing genocide in Gaza,” Bississo highlighted. “We’re focusing on deepening the connection between donors and the students, sharing personal stories that showcase the difference their contributions make.”
Reflecting on the year, Bississo’s main takeaway is the profound impact of collective community action. “When individuals come together for a shared cause, the outcomes can be extraordinary.”
Looking to the future, the Pop-up for Gaza team is exploring ways to expand their impact, possibly collaborating with more NGOs and extending their reach beyond Jordan. “Our goal is to maintain our momentum and continue supporting those in need amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza,” Bississo shared.
“This experience has deepened my belief in humanity. The hardships in Gaza are severe, but the enduring hope and resilience of its people inspire us daily. We are committed to giving back and grateful for the opportunity to make a difference, no matter how small,” Bississo concluded.
In uncertain times, Pop-up for Gaza stands as a testament to the power of community, hope, and the commitment to making a difference, no matter the challenges faced.
