Our exclusive Interview With Karma Bdeir of The MedShed

Founded by Karma Bdeir, The MedShed is a family of deliciously hearty snacks made with a lot of love & a whole lot of goodness.

From interior architecture to healthy snacks, walk us through your journey.

Design took first dibs when I first started out, but along the way, my other passions got too loud to ignore – health & wellness + snacks/supermarkets/manufacturing. I followed my heart & here we are! Especially I grew up in the 90’s around toxic diet-culture, the alternative holistic approach to wellness was so exciting and intriguing to me. My design personality comes with me everywhere tho

We noticed you use “feel” when you describe your “feel-osophy” can you please elaborate?

Med shed

I strongly believe the idea that ‘feeling is the secret’. How you feel internally manifests into your life externally. Feelings are such important guideposts. I highly honor them & their messages, I wanted to tie that into my brand.

We love the Medshed’s original name, how did you come up with it?

It is not a normal expectation to have to start popping pills when you reach a certain age, if you live an unhealthy life yes, but MedShed is here to inspire a change, it’s about ‘Shedding the Meds’ starting with shedding this outdated idea and inspiring the wisdom of prevention by leading a healthier mind/body/soul approach to wellness.

Where do you get your inspiration from when crafting your healthy snacks?

Med shed

I spend a lot of time indulging in watching baking & cooking videos, I guess all that data gets stored before my own ideas & recipes start coming out of me, every MedShed recipe is my own. & most of them have barely gone through many trials and tests if I’m being honest!

Do you compromise on taste?

Never ever.

Food is simply meant to taste good! Snacks & desserts are meant to taste even better! Life is too short for bad food.  And with the abundance of alternative healthy ingredients & recipe resources out there, healthy food tasting bad no longer flies

What constitutes a healthy snack?

Med shed

MedShed snacks are all certified Low Glycemic Index healthy snacks.  Clean, minimally processed, nutrient-dense ingredients + balanced macros – a good balance of healthy carbs/fats/protein/fiber & natural sugars.

MedShed prevents that sugar rush/crash that you get from regular unhealthy snacks.

What is your favorite Medshed snack?

I mostly sway between the strawberry roll-up, almond flaxseed and chocolate chunk cookie. I love my cookies with my morning tea and the roll-ups are the ultimate candy snack!

What is your snacking rule (if you have one)?

Med shed

I’m not big on food rules, my food religion is: intuitive eating/snacking! Snack when you feel like it, assess how a food makes you feel and don’t overdo it. Intuitive eating can be difficult at first but with practice it gets easier.

What are the pros and cons of snacking?

Pros: healthy snacking boosts afternoon slumps, they can be great dessert replacement after meals & the right choices provide added nutrition!  Cons.. are there even any? Hehe no, overdoing it can spoil your meal – so don’t do that! Pace your snacks & eat your meals.

What is your vision for the future of Medshed?

Med shed

MedShed snacks in every pantry, purse & shelf.

Tea or coffee?

Previously oat milk lattes, now matcha all the way.

What is your secret indulgence?

If I tell you, it won’t be a secret anymore.

How would your friends describe you?

Quirky in my own way, life-loving, creative, trustworthy & empathetic. They also said I have a beautiful soul & strong drive (I asked them) it made me tear up! Everyone should ask their friends this question it’s so touching.

What is your favorite fast-food chain?

Med shed

Fortunately, fast food doesn’t do anything for me but if I had to choose, fried chicken tenders from anywhere with honey mustard sauce.

Would you rather eat pizza or ice cream as the only food for eternity?

I’m going to say pizza. You can switch up the toppings and make a Nutella pizza for dessert – win/win.

What did you want to be when you were small?

A backstage dancer. I still have hopes for that..

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island

My bed, a fishing net & a ziplock of MedShed strawberry rollups because they last so long.

Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest?

My visual sense, I’m very visual, I see everything. It’s both a blessing & a curse.

What’s your go-to guilty pleasure?

Sharawi mastic gum. Something about that mastic flavor is so nostalgic.

Do you have a favorite type of exercise?

Outdoors power-walking, is my literal medicine.
