“Dry Cleansing” || TikTokers’ New Way of Washing Their Face

What is Dry Cleansing?

The concept is simple: applying a cleanser directly to a dry face using dry hands. Though it might sound harsh, TikTokers claim that this cleansing method effectively clears their pores, reduces oil production, and maximizes the concentration of active ingredients due to its undiluted nature.

Does it actually work?

Well, it depends. For this technique to work, you need to do it with the right cleanser formula. For instance, gel or foam-based cleansers are activated by water, so dry cleansing won’t work with those types of cleansers, it can cause friction and sometimes lead to an adverse reaction.

On the other hand, lipid-based cleansers, medicated washes, like sulfur, for breakouts, and micellar waters are designed to be used on dry skin. So you can use them to dry-cleanse your face.

Are there any benefits?

By dry cleansing, you can maximize the benefits of your cleanser. Dampening your face with water beforehand might dilute the ingredients, preventing you from getting the best results. According to TikTok users, this method provides a smoother finish and is especially effective for thorough cleansing on heavy makeup days. The oils used in dry cleansing can help unclog pores and minimize the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads, making it an excellent option for those with oily skin types.

How to do it?

Find the right cleanser: The right cleanser is crucial for this trend to work. Opt for gentle, non-foaming cleansers that come in cream or oil-based formulations. Your skin needs to feel slippery when you apply the cleanser to avoid any pulling or tugging. Look for cleansers with hydrating ingredients such as ceramides, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and plant-based oils to nourish and protect your skin.

Apply to dry face: With your dry hands, massage a small amount of the cleanser onto your face in upward strokes. Let it set in for 30-60 seconds.

Rinse with water: Wash your face with lukewarm water then pat dry with a clean and soft towel.
